Maternity Photography Information | Booking a Maternity Session
Since I’ve been shooting a lot of maternity sessions lately, I thought I would put together a maternity photography FAQ page to help answer any questions regarding a maternity photography session.
So, here goes! π

Q. When is the best time to book a maternity photography session?
A. I would recommend booking a session in your last trimester when your baby bump is more noticeable.
I’ve had clients book as early as 6-7 months and some have booked up until the very last month. It’s really up to you and when you feel most comfortable (or as comfortable as can be).
But, I would definitely recommend booking earlier in your last trimester (or somewhere in between) so you’re not as tired during your shoot as we will be doing some light walking (depending on the location you choose).
Q. How far in advance should I book?
A. I typically book 2-3 months in advance. My weekends tend to fill up pretty quickly but if you can get a weekday off, I’ll have more availability as well. Please inquire for available dates via my contact form or email: janet@lovejanetphoto.com.

Q. What’s included in a maternity session?
A. Depending on what package you choose, a maternity session can take anywhere from 1-2 hours. You can choose up to 2 locations of your choice and have up to 2 outfit changes. In addition, you’ll get roughly 35-50+ edited high resolution images that are uploaded to a password protected online gallery to share with friends and family.
I also offer prints and albums with certain packages or you can always add as an a la carte item later on. Please inquire for full package details via my contact form or email: janet@lovejanetphoto.com.
Q. What’s the price for a maternity session?
A. For basic pricing, currently between $499 – $549. But I do have a variety of packages you can choose from. If for some reason the packages I offer do not fit your needs, I can help create a custom package just for you. Please inquire for full package details.
Q. Can I bring my spouse/partner? How about my kids or pet (s)?
A. Yes, of course! It’s encouraged actually. The session fee includes up to 4 people. There will be a $25 “sitting fee” per additional person as it will take a bit more time to photograph the additional groupings.

Q. What’s your turnaround time? When will I get my photos?
A. Turnaround time is 2-3 weeks from date of your session. You’ll receive a link to download the images via email. Depending on which package you choose, you may also receive a custom USB with your photos on it delivered via USPS.
Q. Where do you shoot your maternity session? Can you make recommendations on locations?
A. It all depends on what type of feel you’re wanting for your session. Do you want more of a beachy, woodsy, urban feel? Or want a more intimate shoot indoors in your home or in a studio setting?
Do you have access to any cool locations via your job or have a place that is near and dear to your heart?
So many options and things to think about! But, I can help make suggestions if you don’t already have some ideas and will definitely help you brainstorm for your session. That’s what I’m here for!
But ultimately, you’ll get the final say on location (s). *Please note: some locations do require a permit to photograph. In that case, you’ll be responsible for any permit or studio fees.

Q. What type of shots/images will I get?
A. You’ll get a variety of unique shots as I tend to overshoot. But you’ll get a mixture of posed (smiling into the camera), candid and creative shots. Plus, a variety of horizontal and vertical images – I like to mix it up!
You’ll get the following for maternity for example (but not limited to):
- Solo shots of mama-to-be + lots of belly shots
- Group photos (everyone together – i.e. spouse/partner, kids, pet (s))
- Mama with kids only (if any)
- Mama-to-be with spouse/partner
- Kids together + individually
- Parent with each kid individually + together
We’ll have time to discuss + brainstorm for your session beforehand so I can get an idea of what you’re looking for. But please come with an open mind + ready to have some fun as I want to create images that are unique to you (and your family).
Q. What is your photography style?
A: Modern, editorial and photojournalistic. I am a natural light photographer and love capturing the in between moments. I especially love it when I can get your personality to shine through the lens.
Q. When is the best time to shoot?
A. Lighting is prettiest during “golden hour” either 1-2 hours before sunset or 1-2 hours after sunrise.
If you have little ones and would prefer a morning shoot, we can do a morning session from 10am – noon. But, will have to find a shady location to shoot or we can photograph your session inside (i.e., your home, studio, Airbnb location).

Q. What should I wear? Can you make recommendations on what to wear?
A. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable; because when you feel comfortable, it will show on camera. You can wear something long and flowy or something more fitted to show off your baby bump.
If you need some help coordinating outfits, I would be more than happy to help. You can check out this post HERE in case you needed more tips for your portrait session. Go to the section on what to wear to get some ideas on coordinating your outfits.
I also pinned a few images on Pinterest for inspiration HERE as well in case you were interested in taking a peek.
I’ve included links to online stores below that came recommended by my maternity clients: Lulus, Pink Blush Maternity, Sexy Mama Maternity and ASOS Maternity to name a few.
*Tip from some of my maternity clients: when shopping at non-maternity sites, just order a size or 2 up (depending on where you are in your pregnancy).
Q. What should I expect during a maternity session?
A. Expect to have so much fun!
Once you show up to your session, I’ll help guide + direct you and place you in the most flattering light + backdrop.
My hope is that you’ve hired me because you trust my vision and trust me wholeheartedly to get the “job” done. So, try to relax as much as possible and come with an open mind. And of course, expect to have the best time ever during your session. You’re in good great hands!

Q. What if I need to reschedule? What if there’s chance of rain on the day of?
A: In case you need to reschedule due to emergency, you can swap out your session time for a future date/location that is available. Also, I typically will play by ear when the forecast predicts rain day of. Luckily, I’ve yet to postpone a shoot because of the rain. *knock on wood*
